Depressed In The Womb

Depressed In The Womb

Pregnant women who are depressed can pass it on to their kids.

New research done in England is finding that infants with depressed moms have abnormal brain wiring, and they have an increased risk of mental illness, anxiety and mood disorders for the rest of their lives.

Scientists have found the infants have reduced "structural connectivity" in the right amygdala of their brains -- the part of the brain that controls emotion -- and the damage can start in the womb.

Previous research looked at kids years after they were born, but this is the first major study into when the changes actually start.

Health experts say the number of kids suffering from depression is rising.
