Man sentenced for killing 3 in Pasadena shooting rampage

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A man who admitted killing his live-in girlfriend, her father and a neighbor during a Pasadena shooting rampage has been sentenced to 181 years to life in prison.

The Los Angeles Times says the lengthy prison term for 47-year-old John Izeal Smith came after he pleaded guilty in December to charges including murder.

Authorities say Smith got into an argument with his girlfriend, 59-year-old Maria Aguiar, in July 2014.

He grabbed an assault rifle and killed the woman, her 91-year-old father and a neighbor who rushed to the scene to help the wounded Aguiar as she lay on a sidewalk.

Two other neighbors were wounded and police faced gunfire when they went to the scene.

Smith barricaded himself in the home but later surrendered.
