LOS ANGELES (AP) — Transit ridership dropped last year across Los Angeles County despite two major light rail extensions, as fewer people take the bus.
The Los Angeles Times reports Monday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the region's largest carrier, lost more than six percent of its total boardings in 2016.
Metro says subway and light-rail boardings rose just over 4 percent, bolstered by the debut of the Gold Line and Expo Line extensions. But those gains did not cancel out a decline in annual bus ridership, which fell nearly 9 percent to 304 million — the lowest in more than a decade.
Bus trips have dropped 18 percent since 2009.
