LOS ANGELES (AP) — High winds sweeping through Southern California have toppled trees and downed power lines, causing outages.
Gusts arrived Thursday and continued overnight in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, hitting about 60 mph (96 kph) in some areas.
Falling trees damaged vehicles and structures, while a gale whipped up heavy seas along the coast.
On the Los Angeles County coast, a sailboat crashed into the Redondo Beach Pier Thursday evening, hurling four people into the water.
Witness Sophia Sabawi tells KNBC-TV she saw the frightening accident while dining at an oceanfront restaurant, but people sprang into action and called 911. Fire and lifeguard personnel rescued the boaters.
The National Weather Service says the winds generated by a trough of low pressure crossing the Great Basin will diminish through Friday.
