1 suspect fatally shot after Bakersfield robberies, pursuit

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A suspect was fatally shot by Bakersfield police during a pursuit after two armed robberies.

Police say two people robbed the All India Sweets and Grocery on Tuesday, and a recycling business was robbed two hours later.

Both times the robbers fled in a maroon Jeep SUV.

Officers spotted a maroon Jeep Cherokee at 9:15 p.m. and a pursuit ensued until the vehicle hit a tree.

Police say a passenger exited the vehicle and ran from officers. One officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect, who died at the scene.

The driver also fled but was taken into custody nearby with what was described as "minor physical force."

A third person in the vehicle was also taken into custody.

Police say a firearm was found in the SUV.
