The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is not only iconic, it's lethal.
For decades it's been listed as a major location for suicide attempts.
In 2016, there were 40 known people who jumped to their deaths and almost 200 more who were talked off the ledge.
To change that, officials are spending $200 million to add a "suicide deterrent" net.
California officials will commemorate the start of construction today.
California Senator Dianne Feinstein and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are planning to attend.
Pelosi says the net will save countless lives and is a great achievement that took years.
“The Golden Gate Bridge is a source of immense pride to San Francisco. But for too many families in our community, it has also been a place of pain.”
The stainless steel net is expected to be finished by 2021 and will sit 20 feet below the bridge running the length of seven football fields.
