Georgia Election Leads to Trump Referendum

President Trump is facing a major political test as Georgia holds a special congressional election to fill a House seat.

On the night before the vote, he said that if a Republican doesn't land the seat in a district it's held for almost 40 years would be a major hit.

GOP candidate Karen Handel is a former Georgia secretary of state and is up against Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff.

The seat up for grabs was originally held by Tom Price, who left to join the Cabinet as health and human services secretary.

During the first round of voting in mid-April, Ossoff nearly hit the 50-percent threshold needed to get the seat outright, however he fell short and landed in a runoff against Handel.

Former Republican National Committee chairman Micheal Steele says the race results could raise questions on whether or not Trump has a strong hold on his party's base.

"I think this race is a wakeup call to the party and the political arm of the administration to pay attention to what they are doing and not doing that could potentially impact future success for the party at the ballot box."
