(Washington, DC) -- A San Diego congressman is trying to block President Trump's efforts to ban transgender people from serving in the military. Democratic Congressman Scott Peters today filed an amendment to the defense appropriations bill. The amendment basically states that none of the funds made available by the bill can be used to implement or enforce a directive from the President that restricts someone's military service because they are transgender.
That action comes following a series of tweets by Trump, who said the U.S. government will not allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military. Peters says recent studies commissioned by the Pentagon find there is likely between 1,300 and 6,600 transgender individuals on active duty in the U.S. military. Peters is one of numerous politicians and others to come out against Trump's directive.
