State Assemblyman Taking Steps to Give People More Time to Cross the Street

Democratic state assemblyman Miguel Santiago wants to make it easier for you to cross the street and change a law that you may not know you were breaking. State law says pedestrians shouldn't begin crossing a street once the walk/don't walk sign begins flashing the countdown.

AB 390, introduced by Santiago, would change state law allowing people to cross the street during the countdown.

Santiago says most people believe they can cross the street while the orange hand blinks its countdown.

"However what they don't know is that when they get to the other side of the street, they're going to receive a $200 ticket."

LA city councilman Jose Huizar pushed through a city resolution supporting Santiago's bill.
