TIME Reveals 2017 Person of the Year Shortlist on NBC’s Today

The list of ten candidates for TIME’s 2017 Person of the Year was announced Monday morning on NBC’s Today. Since 1927, TIME has picked the Person of the Year, shining the spotlight on a person or group who directly influenced the most negative and positive news during the past year.

Last year, President Donald Trump was TIME’s Person of the Year, after winning the presidential election.

This year, Trump is back on the finalist list, alongside other politicians such as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and China’s President, Xi Jinping, who received a second five-year term this year and was written into the Communist Party’s constitution.

Alongside those global leaders is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is the son of King Salman and recently cracked down on corruption in the royal family.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller also made the list, after bringing charges against four people in his investigation of potential Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election.

Aside from the political candidates, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, was also picked after locking down the “richest man in the world” title earlier this year.

Both “Wonder Woman” director, Patty Jenkins, and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, were listed for the conversations they fueled during 2017. Kaepernick launched a national protest against racism and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, while Jenkins broke gender barriers and became the first woman to direct a movie that pocketed more than $100 million in its opening weekend.

Two candidates aren’t exactly people -- one being a group of people, and the last people a national movement. The Dreamers, or the thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States by their parents, is on the list after facing hardships with President Donald Trump’s Administration.

The #MeToo Movement ends the list, which hoped to shed light on the importance of sexual assault victims banding together following numerous allegations against big-time Hollywood names such as Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein.

The 2017 Person of the Year will be revealed on Today in the 7 a.m. hour on Wednesday the 6th, and will also be posted on Time.com.
