73 Stingray Injuries Reported in One Day at Huntington Beach

Marine officials say a new stingray injury record has reached 73 people in a single day!

Marine Safety Lieutenant Claude Panis says that he had never seen so many injuries reported at that level in his 40 years of lifeguard work.

Panis says this uptick is because of low tides, small surf and warm waters.

Lifeguards are working to educate people on how to keep stingrays away, one technique being to kick sand ahead of them to scare off the animals.

This avoids the common stinging situation of stepping on the ray and taking a stinger to the foot.
