Mayor Garcetti promised to overhaul the hiring practices of the LAFD and be more inclusive to reflect the demographics of the city. A major component of the overhaul was the plan to hire more women. The LAFD tried rigorous recruitment but the search only yielded limited increases.
This slow rate of growth won't' help Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas' goal to double the number of female firefighters by 2020.
