Amorous Couples Expected to Flock to County for Valentine's Day Weddings

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with a wedding?

Hundreds of people will likely be tying the knot today on what many people believe to be the most romantic day of the year.

That means people planning on a civil ceremony at Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's offices should probably anticipate some lines.

Brenda Duran, spokeswoman for the county clerk's office, said on a typical day, a total of about 50 civil ceremonies are performed by the office at its various locations. But on Valentine's Day last year, 285 couples got hitched.

The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's main office in Norwalk tends to be the busiest, with 90 ceremonies held there on Valentine's Day last year. Beverly Hills was the second-busiest, with 56 ceremonies, Duran said.

The fee for a civil wedding ceremony is $35. A separate fee is charged for the marriage license: $91 for a public license and $85 for a confidential license.

Couples can apply for the license online at www.lavote.net, or at one of the clerk's offices. The Norwalk office at 12400 Imperial Highway will be open for ceremonies from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the remote offices will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The clerk's district offices are:

-- Lancaster, 44509 16th St. West, suite 101;

-- LAX/Courthouse, 11701 S. La Cienega Blvd.;

-- Van Nuys, 14340 W. Sylvan St.;

-- Florence/Firestone, 7807 S. Compton Ave., room 102;

-- East Los Angeles, 4716 E. Cesar Chavez Blvd, building B; and
