LONG BEACH (CNS) - A man accused of using an electric scooter to attack and kill a 63-year-old woman on a Long Beach street was in custody this morning as the victim was being mourned by her family.
The victim was identified as Rosa Elana Hernandez of Long Beach, according to Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy.
“It's like heartbreaking in a way... to see that happen to someone that didn't deserve that to happen, that's crazy,” Hernandez's nephew, Abel Angulo, told ABC7.
Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. Monday to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6400 block of North Obispo Avenue, Dandoy said.
“Upon arrival, officers located a female adult with significant injuries to her upper torso,” according to a police statement.
Fire department personnel responded and pronounced the woman, Dandoy said.
“Through their initial investigation, homicide detectives believe the suspect physically assaulted the victim and then proceeded to utilize a motorized scooter as a weapon during the assault,” police said.
The suspect was seen running west from the location, and about 5 p.m. detectives located a man, initially described as a person of interest, at a store in the area of Downey Avenue and Artesia Boulevard, police said.
The man was later booked on suspicion of murder and was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, police said.
The motive for the attack was still under investigation, LBPD Sgt. John Magallanes said.
The suspect's name was not immediately available.
