After the Governor of Illinois prohibited all social gatherings back on March 20th, Brant Walker, the Mayor of Alton, Illinois, noticed that some people were still hosting events despite those state orders. So, he ordered the Alton Police Department to go out and bust up any parties and residents choosing to ignore those rules.
And that's when things got awkward...
Officers were breaking up a gathering at a bar early Sunday morning when they recognized one of the party-goers. Guess who they busted?
The mayor's wife!
Mayor Walker seemed surprised, but didn't show any leniency, telling the police chief to treat his wife, Shannon, "as he would any citizen violating the 'stay-at-home' order and to ensure she receives no special treatment." He later issued a public apology saying he was "embarrassed by this incident."
"My wife is an adult capable of making her own decisions, and in this instance she exhibited a stunning lack of judgment," he said. "She now faces the same consequences for her ill-advised decision as the other individuals who chose to violate the 'Stay at Home' order."
Shannon Walker was cited for reckless conduct, which is a misdemeanor. According to the officers, each person cited at the bar on Sunday will be summoned to court at a later date.
