Bay Area Police Chase Ends When Car Plunges Off Bridge

A high-speed chase through California's Bay Area ended when the man being pursued -- a suspected car thief -- crashed through a barrier and plunged more than 100 feet off the side of a bridge, police say.

The pursuit began Sunday evening on Interstate 80 after an officer recognized a Honda Civic as having been reported stolen, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman. The unidentified auto thief led officers on a high-speed chase through several counties before arriving at the Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, according to an incident report. That's where he lost control of the vehicle and went sailing over the side of the bridge, police say.

The vehicle burst into flames upon hitting the ground, leaving the man's body so badly burned, it took a day for the coroner to identify him.

“Remember, taking care of one another goes beyond wearing a face covering and physical distancing," California Highway Patrol Commissioner Warren Stanley said. "As communities in California move into the next phases of reopening, continue to slow down, pay attention to the road, drive sober, and keep yourself and those around you from becoming a grim statistic.”
