Supreme Court Rules New York Cannot Limit Religious Services

The Supreme Court has issued a ruling saying that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo cannot enforce coronavirus restrictions on religious gatherings and services in his state.

The case was brought by a Catholic diocese and Jewish synagogue, who argued that the restrictions violated the First Amendment.

The court says there’s no evidence that the organizations that brought the lawsuit have contributed to the spread of COVID-19.

The vote landed 5-4 in favor of the religious organizations, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan in the minority.
