Tasty Tuesday - Fast Food News, Chicken Sandwich War & Toxic Food Packaging

It's Tasty Tuesday! Here's your food news for the day. The hottest item in the fast-food burger business is no longer a burger – it’s a chicken sandwich! In the past three months McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Popeyes and other chains have introduced fried-chicken sandwiches. As restaurants deal with the restrictions and slowdowns caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, restaurant operators are hoping to get customers excited by offering crispy chicken sandwiches.

Say “goodbye” to toxic food packaging at McDonald’s. The fast-food giant has announced its plan to remove harmful chemicals from food packaging by 2025 and make a more sustainably wrapped burger. What sort of chemicals does the chain plan to remove from its burger wrapper? The fast-food giant says it plans to eliminate all PFAS from its packaging after several environmental advocacy groups conducted a study last year on wrappers.

Mind the Store Campaign Director, Mike Schade, thinks McDonald’s needs to hurry up:

"We appreciate McDonald's taking this important action and heeding our call. However, four years is far too long for their customers and frontline communities to continue to be polluted by these unnecessary forever chemicals. We urge McDonald's to phase these chemicals out by 2022 and ensure substitutes are safe and reusable. Other major fast-food chains like Burger King and Wendy's should join them in driving PFAS out of food packaging,"
