HB Officer Charged with Playing Online Trick on Co-Worker

SANTA ANA (CNS) - A Huntington Beach police officer is facing two misdemeanor charges for a playing a trick online on a co-worker, who started dating the defendant's ex-girlfriend, prosecutors said today.

Steven Tennant, 32, of Yorba Linda, is charged with two misdemeanor counts of Internet impersonation and could face two years in Orange County Jail if convicted at trial, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Tennant is accused of posting the fellow officer's picture and phone number on a website, prosecutors said. The victim started receiving text messages referring to the online ad, prosecutors said.

Tennant allegedly posted the ads online Sept. 20 and Sept. 26 after the co-worker started dating the defendant's ex-girlfriend, prosecutors said. When the officer reported it to his supervisors, the police department started an internal probe, prosecutors said.

“Impersonating another individual on the Internet is not a joke,'' Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. “It is a crime that could result in serious harm.''
