LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today he has nominated Keith Mozee to be executive director of the Bureau of Street Services and Dana Brown to be general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.
Both appointees already work for the departments, with Dana Brown currently serving as interim general manager of L.A. Animal Services following the retirement of Brenda Barnette as general manager, and Mozee serving as assistant director of StreetsLA.
“Keith and Dana bring a breadth of experience, a deep track record of leadership and depth of knowledge that will continue to set the highest possible standard for city services,'' Garcetti said. “Under the tutelage of Adel and Brenda, Keith and Dana have learned what it means to bring this city back to basics, and I have the utmost confidence they will lead their respective departments toward a new chapter of accountability, efficiency and sustainability.''
As assistant director of StreetsLA, Mozee oversaw the Street Renewal Division, Engineering Division, Construction Services Division and Emergency Operations. During his 31 years of service to the city, he also served as StreetsLA chief operations officer, racial equity officer and COVID-19 safety officer.
“I am deeply honored by this opportunity to lead the workforce of StreetsLA during this critical time in our history,'' said Mozee, “I've spent my entire career at StreetsLA, and I am committed to improving our services to the public and enhancing the look and feel of our streets and neighborhoods through sustainable measures to create safe and healthy communities for all Angelenos.”
As the bureau's executive director, Mozee will oversee the U.S.' largest municipal street network and urban forest. The current executive director, Adel Hagekhalil, will become the general manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California on June 30.
Brown has also worked for the city for more than 30 years, Garcetti's office said. She served as assistant general manager of the L.A. Department of Animal Services under Barnette. After that, she worked as the city's chief employee relations officer at the City Administrative Officer's office before becoming interim general manager of L.A. Animal Services. While at the CAO's office, she helped lead the city's labor negotiations amid pandemic-related operational challenges.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity,'' Brown said. “I will continue to collaborate with the community and our rescue partners to develop new strategies and programs to protect the health, safety and welfare of the animals and people of Los Angeles.''
The appointments must be confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council.
