ALHAMBRA (CNS) - The Los Angeles County Development Authority announced today it has been awarded a $9.9 million grant that will go toward sound insulation improvements for residents affected by noise from nearby Los Angeles International Airport.

The owners of more than 200 residences, including single and multi- family dwellings in the unincorporated areas of Athens, Del Aire and Lennox are expected to receive assistance including sound-rated windows, doors, air conditioning systems and necessary electric system upgrades at a value averaging $40,000 per residence as a result of the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell said in a statement she was pleased that the county would “once again receive federal grant funds to help homeowners in the Lennox, Del Aire, and Athens community mitigate noise pollution in their homes.''

“LAX is the world's third-busiest airport, a plane lands once every minute. As we celebrate our region's immense draw, we must also take into account that for our communities near the airport, plane traffic is a quality-of-life issue. The residential sound insulation program directly helps address this issue by providing our communities with grants to upgrade windows, doors, air conditioning and ventilation systems,'' Mitchell added.

The authority's executive director, Emilio Salas, said it strives to partner with elected officials to work together to improve the quality of life for residents in unincorporated areas of the county.

“Wherever possible, it is our goal to bring such much-needed resources at no cost to residents,'' Salas said.

The residential sound insulation program, which has been operating since 1992, has received a total of $178 million from the FAA and the Los Angeles World Airport to provide sound insulation, with more than 4,300 dwellings assisted, officials said.
