More than 9,000 Unvaccinated NYC Employees Placed on Unpaid Leave

Following through on their threat, New York City officials on Monday placed more than 9,000 workers on unpaid leave for failing to meet the vaccination deadline, according to Mayor Bill de Blassio.

  • The workers who were sent packing on Monday are among some 21,000 city employees who’ve yet to receive their shots, although 12,000 of them applied for medical or religious exemptions, de Blassio says. Their requests are still under review, he notes.
  • Despite the high number of anti-vaxxers, de Blassio says, “More than 91 percent of our city workforce has gotten vaccinated against COVID-19, and that number is still growing."
  • Should these people be fired? Do you believe all 21,000 religious or medical exemptions are legit?
