Forecasters with the National Weather Service say a storm system that's arriving over the state on Monday could result in "significant" rainfall, mountain snow and chilly wind gusts -- all the way through New Year's Eve!

(Actually, the storm that's expected to arrive late Monday won't be the same one that could cause problems later in the week, according to NWS meteorologist Joe Sirard).

He says after a six-hour sweep of the Los Angeles area, the first storm should clear out by about 9 p.m. -- making way for the second, more powerful storm to arrive on Tuesday.

The NWS has already issued a winter storm warning for California's mountains, saying temperatures could get down to as low as 40 degrees later this week.
