How one father used Disney to connect with his autistic son

Posted July 30th, 2014 @ 6:23am

Ron Suskind's son, Owen, was a typical, inquisitive, talkative toddler.

But just before his third birthday, Owen suddenly stopped communicating, didn't want to sleep or eat, and cried constantly.

After seeing a series of doctors, Owen was diagnosed as autistic.

The only things that soothed him were the Disney movies he loved before his diagnosis.  But, where Owen could once recite dialogue easily, he no longer could.

Seeing a ray of hope, Ron and his family used Disney movies and their dialogue to try to communicate with him.

Ron's book, Life Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes and Autism is about the family's long journey to reconnect with Owen.
