Learn how KFI is run
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR KFI-AM 640 and KTLK AM 1150 PROGRAMMING
If you’re passionate about talk radio and want a well-rounded experience to find out what there is to offer in the industry, then you'll want to experience an internship with KFI AM 640 or KTLK-AM 1150.
From assisting the show’s producers with in-depth segment research, to experiencing a day in the life of a news reporter, you’ll be exposed to all aspects of the industry during your time with us.
You’ll leave the experience with full knowledge of what it takes to make it in the industry.
INTERN QUALIFICATIONS
All interns MUST:
-Receive school credit for internship
-Be able to participate in an 8-12 week program
-Be willing to work at least 2 days per week/ 5-6 hours a day
-Be willing to work early morning OR late night hours if needed
-Be motivated to work hard
-NOT be offended easily, as this is a fast-paced, sometimes ‘blue’ environment
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
All interns MUST:
-Have good computer/typing skills
-Have excellent writing skills
-Be able to multitask
-Be able to work on a hard and fast deadline
-Be able to take initiative be unafraid to ask questions
Audio editing skills are not mandatory (they will be taught here), but are helpful in accelerating your experience.
SPECIAL NOTE
There is a 30 day period at the start of the internship in which the intern can choose to leave the program if they feel it's not working out. However, we reserve the right to dismiss an intern at any time for reasonable cause (i.e. excessive absences, tardiness, inappropriate behavior)
PROGRAM BREAKDOWN
Please note: With the exception of Week #1, all other weeks may be taught in any order to accommodate your ability to work with other employees at the station and their schedules.
WEEK #1—The Basics
During the first week you will experience the basics of how a talk show works:
-How the host does the show
-How producers put the show together each day
-How the morning show anchor puts together the newscasts
-How the engineer runs the show
During Week #1 you will also:
-Learn how to write publicist ‘review copy’ requests
-Help producers respond to listener emails / publicist requests
Skills learned in week #1 will be something you utilize throughout the entire internship.
WEEK #2 and #3—Research & Development
Whether you want to be a talk show host, a producer, or a news reporter, learning how to research and develop topics properly and accurately is a must, so during Week #2 you will:
-Where to find potential segments for the show
-Assist producers in researching and developing subjects for possible show segments
-Learn how to track down potential show guests
-Learn about the importance of “follow-up” research
-Learn how to conduct ‘pre-interviews’
Skills learned in weeks #2 and #3 will be something you will utilize throughout the entire internship.
WEEK #4—Screening
For a show that takes listener calls, the calls are only as good as the person screening them. You want calls that bring something to the table, versus someone who is dull and boring. Callers should add to the show, not take away from it.
During week #4 you will learn:
-What screening is
-How to properly screen a call for air
WEEK #5 & #6—Website Development & Editing
A show’s website and social networking pages are a vital part of a show’s success. During weeks #5 and #6 you will learn:
-How to update a typical show's web page on the station site
-How to edit audio
-How to post the podcasts
-The importance of our social networking pages
WEEK #7 & #8—Station Imaging
The ‘attitude’ of a radio station is as important as the programming, during weeks #7 and #8 you will:
-Learn the importance of station imaging
-Learn audio editing software for the purposes of station imaging
-Pull and edit sound bytes for show promos
Before you are done with your internship you will put together an entire station promo that will air LIVE on KFI.
Weeks #7 and #8 will be spent with Craig Taylor, KFI’s Imaging Director.
WEEK #9—Production, Traffic & Continuity
Commercials are an important part of any radio station.
During Week #9 you will:
-Work with the production department to learn how they put together the commercials that air on the radio station
-Spend time with the Continuity Department to see how and why the commercials are scheduled they way they are
Week #9 will be spent with someone in the Production Department and also with someone in the either the Traffic or Continuity Department.
WEEK #10— NEWS
While News and Programming work together, there are some significant differences between the two that you need to know.
During this week you will:
-Learn the difference in being a news reporter and a talk show host
-Learn how to put a full news cast together
-Spend an entire day with a news reporter, out in the field and learn all aspects of the job they do.
Week #10 will be spent with one of KFI's news anchors and one of the KFI News Reporters
WEEK #11—Promotions
Promotions are an important part of any radio station. So you need to know how they work.
During week #11 you will:
-Spend time with Promotions working on tasks and also possibly working a Promotions event for the radio station.
Week #11 will be spent with Promotions
WEEK #12—AM versus FM & Overall Review
During the final week of the internship, if possible, the intern will spend a day with one of our FM sister stations to learn the differences in ‘AM’ and ‘FM’ morning show programming.
The final week will also encompass a review of the intern’s entire experience, and field questions from the intern about any aspect of the internship
