"We found love in a hopeless place."
So went the lyrics of the song that marked the beginning of a wedding Saturday. The relationship got its start at a funeral.
The groom was Doug Childers, one of the first to rush to the Salon Meritage massacre last year and tend to the shooting victims. And the bride was Tammy Hetzel, a former Meritage stylist who had lost friends in the tragedy.
They met at the funeral of Laura Webb Elody. And they've been together ever since.
Surrounding them on Saturday were some 30 family members and friends who gathered at the First Street beach, near the site where a permanent memorial is likely to be built in honor of those who died. Some of the guests were related to the Meritage slaying -- yet another symbol that the tragedy that hit Seal Beach last Oct. 12 bonded people in a unique way.
