The City Council moved to regulate the valet parking industry Wednesday, a decision that received mixed reviews from community members, restaurant owners and valet parking companies.

Under the final ordinance being considered by the council, valet companies would need operating permits and insurance. Their drivers would also require valid operating drivers' licenses and insurance.

The new rules are intended to rein in rogue valet parking companies, said City Councilman Eric Garcetti, who pointed to a growing number of problems in his district of Hollywood.

"Like any business, there are good operators and bad operators," Garcetti said.

While neighboring cities like Beverly Hills and West Hollywood regulate valet companies, similar rules don't exist in Los Angeles.
