Nearly every city in
Orange County received an "F' grade in tobacco-control policies, according to a report issued Wednesday by the American Lung Association.

"State of Tobacco Control 2013 – California Local Grades" tracks progress on tobacco control policies, assigning grades based on whether the association determines laws are adequately protecting citizens from tobacco's toll on the public's health.

It looks at such areas as smoke-free outdoor environments, smoke-free housing, and efforts to reduce sales of tobacco products.

"Safeguarding our communities from the negative consequences of tobacco is critical," said Dr. Afif El-Hasan, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente who serves on the association's California governing board. "These grades represent real health consequences."
