
A Rancho Cucamonga-based bread company is in the process of changing the name of its popular squaw bread after a heated debate over the use of the term erupted on social media.
The owners of Old Town Baking Company, located in the shopping center southwest of Base Line Road and Carnelian Street, received e-mails and Facebook messages asking them to change the name of the bread.
Native American groups consider the term "squaw" a deeply derogatory term , according to USC professor David Treuer, an acclaimed novelist who writes Native American-themed literature.
Stacey Bishop, who manages the company with her husband Adam, and Adam's father Don Bishop, received an email from Treuer on Feb. 8, informing them of the offensive nature of the word. (MORE AT DAILYBULLENTIN.COM)
