John Edwards’ first witness testified Monday that even the feds didn’t think the money used to hide his pregnant mistress should be considered campaign cash.
The dry testimony from beancounter Laura Haggard was in stark contrast to the prosecution’s parade of witnesses, who regaled the jury with details of sex, lies and videotape for nearly three weeks.
While the government trotted out one salacious anecdote after another, Edwards’ lawyers are expected to narrowly focus on the ins and outs of campaign finance law.
The former presidential hopeful is accused of diverting unreported campaign donations into a slush fund used to keep galpal Rielle Hunter one step ahead of the paparazzi and him in the race for the White House.
