The countdown to "Carmageddon II" is on, and city and county officials have announced "destination discounts" for dining, shopping and entertainment venues.

On the weekend of September 29-30, a 10-mile stretch of the 405 between the 101 and the 10 will be shut down for 53 hours while crews demolish the north side of the Mulholland Drive bridge.

The first "Carmageddon" closure was last July, when construction crews demolished the south side of the bridge.  That weekend turned out surprisingly well, as people stayed off the freeways and remained near home.  And those who did drive on the freeways said traffic was much lighter than it normally would have been.
