City and transportation officials celebrated the ceremonial beginning of construction Tuesday on the long-envisioned $188 million transportation hub known as ARTIC.

Actual construction is set to begin later this month on a 67,000-square-foot, three-story terminal building that will redefine the skyline between Honda Center and Angel Stadium. ARTIC stands for Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center.

"All great urban areas should have a transportation hub. ARTIC is our Grand Central Station," said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, who spoke to a crowd of more than 300 people, including government and transportation officials.

The center is set to open by November 2014 and is expected to serve more than 10,000 passengers daily.
