An employee of the Orange County Sheriff's Department is on leave in the wake of his arrest on suspicion of taking pictures up women's skirts with a cellphone strapped to his shoe, officials said Wednesday.

Jose Alderete, 38, of Fontana was taken into custody outside a Target in that city on Monday after a woman noticed him fiddling with a cellphone on his shoe, said Sgt. Bob Morris with the Fontana Police Department. The woman's husband chased Alderete as he ran out the store and held him in the parking lot while officers responded.

On Tuesday, Alderete was put on administrative leave from the Sheriff's Department, where he worked handling supplies for inmates in county jails, said Jim Amormino, a department spokesman. Alderete is a non-sworn employee.
