Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is an unlikely fan of dance and techno music. While at restaurant Toy in the Meatpacking District on Monday night, Villaraigosa turned to the diner next to him, restaurant co-owner and co-founder of the boozy “Day & Night” brunch Daniel Koch, to ask about his V-Moda headphones. The two began chatting about their favorite DJs, including Paul Van Dyk, and they then put Van Dyk songs on Koch’s iPod while sharing headphones. Then, to the surprise of other diners the seemingly reserved mayor began dancing. He also got into DJ Whoo Kid’s music as he spun at Nima Yamini’s weekly party, said an onlooker, who added that Villaraigosa was eating with some political types, but they were all “fun and very approachable.”
