California Republican leaders want the U.S. Attorney's Office to investigate the CalFire hidden money scandal. Check out the press release below:
Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) and Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway (R-Tulare) issued the following statement after sending a letter to the California Attorney General requesting that she refer the latest allegations that a state agency engaged in deceitful and potentially fraudulent budget practices to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California:
“The people of California deserve to know how their money is spent. This latest scandal where millions of dollars were hoarded away at the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection erodes the public's trust that the state is being good stewards of their money.
“The most disappointing aspect of this hidden state money scandal is that the Governor and the Legislature punted responsibility to the Attorney General, who failed to properly handle the investigations. As a result, those involved in the misuse of public funding will not be held legally accountable. The Attorney General’s Office decided not to pursue any criminal investigation and granted immunity so broad that it makes any prosecution virtually impossible.
“We do not wish the same fate for an upcoming investigation into the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. An independent investigation into this matter is needed urgently.”
