Nearly 300 businesses, venues and tourist destinations are planning to offer discounts and other special deals to encourage Angelenos to stay out of their cars and instead eat, shop and play close to home during Carmageddon II.

The second weekend-long closure of the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass is scheduled for Sept. 28-30 so that crews can continue the demolition of the Mulholland bridge that was started last summer.

"But car-free doesn't mean fun-free," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told a crowd during a news conference Tuesday at the Hollywood & Highland center.

About 500,000 vehicles would normally use the 405 during the time it will be closed. The closures will begin 7 p.m. Friday, Sept.
