Highway patrol officers will be out in force this New Year's holiday, an annual enforcement blitz in which 1,200 people were detained in California last year on drunken-driving charges.

New Year's Day consistently ranks as the worst day of the year for alcohol-related deaths, according to AAA. In California, alcohol-involved crashes killed 99 during the New Year's holidays from 2006 through 2010, state statistics show, the most of any major holiday.
