Was it wrong for people to bet on who the new pope would be?

Argentina — Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio’s ascension to the papacy created a holy payday for the bettors who chose the extreme long shot, but doesn’t effect the oddsmakers, who take their cut off the top.

Bergoglio was given 33-1 odds on the website of the Irish bookmaker Paddy Power, and was 25-1 on William Hill’s site.

He wasn’t even listed on America’s Line in Vegas, which put Angelo Cardinal Scola of Italy and Peter Cardinal Turkson of Ghana as the most likely winners.
