It's time to get that bike out of the garage!  From LA DAILY NEWS:

Local public officials and the bicycling community kicked off Bike Week L.A. on Monday by urging Angelenos to dust off their bikes and pedal to work and other places.

"With nearly 60 percent of trips in Los Angeles County under 5 miles, we have a great opportunity to start bicycling right now," said Dan Dabek, executive director of the nonprofit Cyclists Inciting Changes Through Live Exchange.

"A basic bike, regular clothes and simple traffic safety rules and you can bike just about anywhere you want "" the grocery store, the bank, school, work or to the movies. "

A lower blood alcohol limit for drivers could be coming to a state near you.  From FOX:

A federal agency is proposing that states lower the threshold for drunken driving to the point where a woman could be charged for driving after one drink and a man after two in a move officials say would save thousands of lives.

The National Transportation Safety Board recommended that all states drop the blood-alcohol level at which motorists can be charged with driving drunk to .05, down from the current rate of .08 that all 50 states impose. The threshold is a matter of state law, but the federal government can pressure states to meet its standard by threatening to withhold highway funding.

A Mountlake Terrace, Wash., teenager accidentally swallowed a piece of grill brush wire while eating, which ultimately got stuck in his intestines – "stabbing him from the inside out," The Seattle Times reported.

It all happened innocently enough.

"Somehow, one of the tiny, hair-like wires got stuck in one of the grills in the barbecue, and in a one-in-a million chance, it got stuck in a piece of chicken that I ate and made it most of the way through my body," Tristin Beck, 16, told The Seattle Times from his hospital bed.

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. — The Calaveras County District Attorney on Tuesday filed charges against the 12-year-old brother of slain Valley Spring 8-year-old Leila Fowler.

The boy's attorney told KTVU early Tuesday evening his client has been charged with second degree murder with a special allegation attached for use of a dangerous weapon.

Attorney Mark Reichel met Tuesday with the boy in juvenile jail then visited the home where the 8-year-old girl was found April 27 with knife wounds. Her brother was the only one home.

Would the sale of the L.A. Times to the Koch brothers affect the story printed in the newspaper?

Unions, activists and artists held a rally on Tuesday, to protest the possible sale of the Los Angeles Times to the Koch brothers, warning that such a sale would turn one of the US's great newspapers into a right-wing mouthpiece.

Hundreds gathered outside the downtown Los Angeles office of Oaktree Capital Management, the largest shareholder in Tribune Co, which owns the LA Times, to deter it from making such a deal. Some carried signs saying "No Koch Hate in LA".

"The idea that the LA Times could be taken over by right-wing radical extremists just boggles the mind," said Glen Arnodo, staff director of the LA County Federation of Labor, as protestors prepared to picket. "It's impossible to believe with their brand of extremism that there would be any objectivity whatsoever."

Do you believe the drunken driving threshold should be cut?

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Federal accident investigators recommended Tuesday that states cut their threshold for drunken driving by nearly half, matching a standard that has substantially reduced highway deaths in other countries.

The National Transportation Safety Board said states should shrink the standard from the current .08 blood alcohol content to .05 as part of a series of recommendations aimed at reducing alcohol-related highway deaths.

More than 100 countries have adopted the .05 alcohol content standard or lower, according to a report by the board's staff. In Europe, the share of traffic deaths attributable to drunken driving was reduced by more than half within 10 years after the standard was dropped.

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach .05 after just one drink, studies show. A man weighing up to 160 pounds reaches .05 after two drinks.

New approaches are needed to combat drunken driving, which claims the lives of more than a third of the 30,000 people killed each year on U.S highways _ a level of carnage that that has remained stubbornly consistent for the past decade and a half, the board said.

Ever seen an Ice Tsunami?   From CNN:

The ice moves inexorably ashore, crackling as it goes like thousands of windows breaking. In minutes, it's moved from the shoreline of a Minnesota lake to the walls of homes along the lake.

"It was just pushing and breaking and pushing and breaking," Darla Johnson, who made a video of Saturday's "ice tsunami" on Mille Lacs Lake, told CNN affiliate WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. Johnson's video had more than 275,000 views on YouTube by Monday morning.

And once you watch it, you can't stop. It's like a sci-fi movie, and there's certainly science involved.
