Hard knocks to the head are a constant concern in contact sports — and not just in football or boxing, where recent attention has focused. Millions of girls and boys play hockey, soccer, lacrosse and other sports where blows to the head from collisions and falls are part of the game, even in youth leagues and on high school teams.

Head injuries can come from a single jarring impact during a game, or from a series of smaller jolts. But in the midst of play, many blows aren’t necessarily easy to spot by coaches, physicians or parents in attendance.

Barack O'bama is headed for Ireland, reports NBC News:

As President Barack Obama heads to Northern Ireland for Monday’s G-8 summit, so too will thousands of anti-capitalist demonstrators, posing a challenge for police even in an area used to high security.

Over 5,000 are expected to attend a union-organized anti-G-8 rally in Belfast on Saturday, and hundreds more have pledged to march from the host town, Enniskillen, to the security cordon surrounding the Lough Erne golf resort where world leaders will meet.

Is this level of security necessary, or is Obama just all pomp and circumstance?

It's been fifty years since a woman was first launched into space, according to The Huffington Post:

Sunday (June 16) marks the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's landmark 1963 flight, which launched her into history as the first woman to fly to space — only two years after Yuri Gagarin performed the first spaceflight ever in 1961. Tereshkova circled the Earth 48 times during her time as the pilot onboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft.

Today, 57 of the 534 people that have flown to space are women, according to space history and artifacts expert Robert Pearlman, editor of collectSPACE.com.

Everyday it seems that today’s youth are coming up with challenges that are deadlier than ever! First there was the ‘cinnamon challenge. Then there was the ‘hot sauce challenge’. Now, a 19-year-old has survived a dangerous sodium overdose after drinking more than a quart of soy sauce on a dare!

After drinking a quart of the sodium-heavy condiment, the teenager slipped into coma with seizure-like activity. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors determined he was suffering from hypernatremia, a metabolic condition in which there is a salt imbalance in the bodily fluids.

Eventually doctors determined that he had ingested 160 to 170 grams of sodium from the soy sauce, a potentially lethal dose for his weight and build. He had effectively overdosed on sodium.

While death from sodium is incredibly rare, it is not unheard of. Read more at Yahoo! News

The Northwest Houston community of Oak Forest is the first neighborhood in the country to benefit from the Armed Citizen Project, a Houston based nonprofit that gives free shotguns to single women and residents of neighborhoods with high crime rates…And this is a good thing?

The organization, which plans to offer training classes in Dallas, San Antonio, and Tucson, Ariz., in the next few weeks, is working to expand its giveaways to 15 cities by the end of the year, including Chicago and New York.

While there are many is Houston that have expressed support for Second Amendment rights, they also question whether more guns will result in more gun-related deaths rather than less crime.

Talk about reaching…In response to First Lady Michelle Obama confronting a heckler at a recent speaking engagement, Conservative radio host and republican mouthpiece Glenn Beck called the First Lady a “monster”!

Ellen Sturtz, who is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activist had engaged Mrs. Obama and heckled her at a private Democratic National Committee fundraising event.

After viewing the confrontation Beck exclaimed; this woman's a monster. She is Lady Macbeth. She is a frightening woman."

Proponents for the legalization of marijuana have a new dog in the fight…Literally. Yes, leading the charge in Medical Marijuana for Canines is the Los Angeles veterinarian known as the “vet Guru”, Doug Kramer.

Veterinarian Doug Kramer considers his work to be “enlightened”, even naming his clinic the Enlightened Veterinary Therapeutics. When hearing about his out-of-the-box methodolgy, it’s hard to argue.

Dr. Kramer administers medical marijuana to dogs, especially those with late-staged cancer. He does so in his clinic, and is undeniably vocal about it. He’s not hiding what he’s doing, and instead is making sure to spread the word as far and wide as he can.

NPR is reporting that Starbucks will no longer allow smoking outside of its stores:

Starbucks is moving its smoking ban outdoors.

Starting Saturday, according to signs posted in its more than 7,000 shops across the U.S. and Canada, "the no-smoking policy ... will include outdoor areas."

"Smoking will be restricted within 25 feet of the store and within outdoor seating areas," the notices read.

Have we trampled on smoker's rights too often? Or does their gross habit deserve to be marginalized?

These days, just about anything involving space and animals will go viral. The Huffington Post reports:

Is that a rat... on Mars?!

Yes, according to a theory from one determined man in Japan who recently scoured dozens of NASA photos taken by the space agency's Mars Curiosity rover. A post on UFO Sightings Daily shows the "Mars rat," which appears to be a creature with legs and a tail among rocks on the planet.

As the blog notes, the figure "seems to resemble a rodent but also may be a lizard."

The alleged Mars rat should not be confused with a similar sighting first pointed out in December: An image taken by the Curiosity rover at the "Rocknest" site in September shows a rodent-like figure that most closely resembles a squirrel. However, as UFO Sightings Daily notes, that observation may have been staged by NASA as part of an experiment.
