Former Los Angeles deputy gets jail time for molesting girl

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A former Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to jail time for molesting a 12-year-old girl in Costa Mesa.

The Orange County Register reported Monday that 26-year-old Jovanni Argueta pleaded guilty on Jan. 11 to lewd act with a minor, attempted sex with a minor and violation of a protective order. He was sentenced the same day to three years in prison, 180 days in jail and five years' probation. The prison term was suspended.

According to court documents, the former deputy met the girl online through a fantasy computer name and then met her in 2015.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department hired Argueta on Aug. 21, 2014. He was no longer a deputy by March 2016.
