An Ontario woman has been arrested after police recovered a dead dog from her vehicle during Southern California's heat wave.

San Bernardino County authorities say a second dog and a cat were also rescued, but in distress after being locked up in the car. The surviving animals were treated and are recovering.

According to the LA Times, officers broke one of the car's windows to rescue the trapped pets in the city of Ontario. Temperatures were reportedly topping 113 degrees. Authorities say they don't know how long the animals were still inside.

The 42-year-old was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of animal cruelty. A necropsy will determine how the dog died.
