The former superintendent for a small school district in Los Angeles is due in court today. Jose Fernandez is accused of changing the rules of the Centinela Valley Union High School District to dramatically increase his salary.
While supervising a handful of schools in Hawthorne and Lawndale, the former superintendent pocketed over $650,000 in pay and benefits in 2013. Fernandez is also accused of unlawfully creating supplemental retirement programs for himself and other school district officials. He was arrested Wednesday and if convicted, could spend up to 15 years in prison.
