Crenshaw and Slauson Intersection Being Renamed in Honor of Nipsey Hussle

The corner of Crenshaw and Slauson will now be honored for Nipsey Hussle, the late musician who was murdered last week. It was first introduced when half-a-million people signed an online petition calling for the honor to be given to Hussle. The intersection will officially be titled Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom Square.

Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson says that Hussle was an icon who will be remembered for his pure LA style and numerous philanthropic efforts in the community.

“Nipsey’s genuine nature allowed him to be a light to everyone he interacted with, from family, friends, fans and his larger community.

“As a father, brother and son, Nipsey was a rock helping to build an empire that will continue through generations. Nipsey will always be remembered for delivering a pure, authentic Los Angeles sound; his numerous philanthropic efforts; his innovative, community-focused business mindset; and his humble heart.”

The councilman and Hussle were well acquainted as the two worked on the Destination Crenshaw project, a 1.3-mile outdoor art and culture experience celebrating black Los Angeles., according to the LA Times.

A resident of the neighborhood spoke with KFI news and said that he first started listening to Nipsey Hussle's music when he was in prison.

"He would actually be played by one of the other guys inside. By listening to him, he got me through a lot of hard times in my life."

A memorial for the rapper will held Thursday at the Staples Center.
