A two-day birthday party may be over, but the celebrating continues at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, which marked its 80th anniversary on Friday. Dubbed "the last of the great railway stations," Union Station opened in 1939 as a central station for trains from the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads.
Designed in the Mission Modern style of architecture, Union Station serves 100,000 passengers and 440 trains of various types every day.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority bought the train station in 2011.
