With a little over three and a half months remaining until the November election, U.S. intelligence suggests that multiple nations around the world may be trying to interfere in America's political process, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Tuesday.
In an interview with MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Schiff was asked if there was any evidence that other nations besides Russia trying to interfere with the 2020 election, Schiff said yes, but different countries used different tactics.
"The Russians may get involved in hacking and dumping operations or social media campaigns," Schiff said. "The Iranians may have their own tactics and techniques like the North Koreans may have theirs."
Schiff also suggested that disinformation about the election was also being laundered through Congress.
Democrats have repeatedly raised the issue about potential interference in the 2020 election, with several Democratic leaders calling on FBI Director Christopher Wray to provide a counterintelligence briefing to Congress before the August recess about any efforts to interfere with the upcoming elections.
“We are gravely concerned, in particular, that Congress appears to be the target of a concerted foreign interference campaign, which seeks to launder and amplify disinformation in order to influence congressional activity, public debate, and the presidential election in November,” the letter sent by Schiff, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, (D-N.Y.), and Senate Intelligence Committee ranking member Mark Warner, (D-Va). said.
"Given the seriousness and specificity of these threats, as members of congressional leadership and congressional intelligence committees we believe it is imperative that the FBI provide a defensive briefing to all Members of Congress and that the briefing draw on all-source intelligence information and analysis, consistent with due regard for the protection of sensitive intelligence sources and methods," the letter sent on Monday added.
Former Vice President Joe Biden said last week that he'd received briefings on the issue and that Russia was again working to interfere with the upcoming elections. The presumptive Democratic nominee for president also expressed concerns about other foreign efforts that would try and sow doubt about the outcome of the election.
"We know from before and I guarantee you I know now because now I get briefings again," Biden said during a fundraising event last week. "The Russians are still engaged in trying to delegitimize our electoral process. Fact."
