LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A woman was fatally struck by a car today when she returned to a disabled car to retrieve some belongings on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in the southwest Los Angeles area.

The 20-year-old San Pedro woman died at the scene about 3:35 a.m. north of Normandie Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives.

According to the CHP, the woman was riding in a 2005 Toyota that became disabled in the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes following a crash.

The woman and the driver got out of the car and made their way to the right shoulder of the freeway, and then went back to the car “to recover personal items,'' a CHP statement said.

The pair were standing next to the driver's side of the car when the woman was fatally struck by a 2004 Toyota driven by a 24-year-old Santa Ana woman, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, the CHP said. Her name was not released.
