LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mayor Eric Garcetti, speaking on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, called the slain civil rights leader “a great American healer.''

“Today, let us dedicate ourselves to Dr. King's vision by binding up the wounds of history, by healing the pain of the present and by pressing forward in the work of building a world of justice and compassion and common humanity,'' Garcetti said in a video posted to his Twitter account Monday afternoon.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day comes less than two weeks after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol amid threats of more armed protests and violence in Washington, D.C., and at all state capitols leading up to and during President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Wednesday.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a revolutionary who transformed the way we see one another, and he preached from a gospel of courage and compassion,'' Garcetti said. “He was a prophet, calling us to live up to our highest ideals and conducting us in a symphony of love and justice.

“He was a holy messenger, a righteous envoy who carried with him a timeless truth that no matter the color of our skin or the origin of our story, we are all equal and worthy in the eyes of God,'' the mayor said.
